Local Cuisine

The main protagonist of Skyros most dishes is wild goat, lobster -which is in abundance in the island-, local fava, snails, honey -from thyme and pine- and generally dairy products. In particular, Skyros is famous for fresh mizithra, xinotiri -a beautiful white soft cheese from goat’s milk with a slightly sour taste and yogurt texture- and local graviere with spicy taste, which is ideal for ouzo or wine pairing.

Pies in Skyros are, also, extremely popular, containing frumenty or rice or cheese or pumpkin or greens or honey and have unique names. The best known is the oil pie, and then cheesepie, the teropitaria (frumenty, rice and mizithra cheese), milkpies, ricepies and bougatsa.

Famous desserts are loukoumades, but also Skyros oil pies with honey.
